Nylon/Polyamid (Back to navigation)

Nylon (chemically known as diamine and a dicarboxylic acid) was formally used as a synonym for stockings. Later however it was used as a name for linear aliphatic Polyamides. The name was patented on 28th February 1935 by Dr. Wallace Hume Carothers (Delaware, USA). It was the first completely synthetic fabric ever created. Nylon was first used for toothbrushes, not for stockings. It was first sold in 1938. The first Nylon stockings were sold in 1940, more than 5 Million pairs where sold in that year throughout US-american cities. (Source: Wikipedia.de)

Note: Nylon/Polyamid may not be as flexible as the fabrics used in modern stockings but instead feels much smoother. Classic Nylon stockings have a seam running up the leg and are typically worn with suspenders.
